Madrid at Christmas: a city full of magic and tradition

In Madrid, Christmas is more than just a season — it’s a complete experience that takes over the streets, squares and everyday life of the city. Starting in late November, the capital begins to shine with festive lights, charming decorations, and a long list of cultural and family-friendly activities.

Whether it’s walking under the lights, shopping in traditional markets, visiting hand-crafted nativity scenes or enjoying open-air concerts, Christmas in Madrid is meant to be experienced slowly and with joy. There’s something special around every corner — music, colour, hot drinks, street performers and children’s laughter.

And the best part? Most of these plans are walkable and can be easily combined with a stop at the Museo del Jamón for a well-earned break full of local flavour.

Lights, markets and nativity scenes: Madrid’s festive staples

Every Christmas season, the city centre lights up with hundreds of LED displays that decorate Madrid’s streets, plazas and buildings. You’ll see the giant tree in Puerta del Sol, the glowing sphere on Gran Vía, the towering Menina on Paseo del Prado, or the iconic Ángel de Madrid in Plaza de Colón — perfect photo spots and true symbols of the season.

Very close to these light displays, you’ll find some of Madrid’s best Christmas markets, each with its own personality. The Plaza Mayor market is ideal for buying ornaments and traditional figures. The market at Paseo de Recoletos focuses on handmade gifts and artisan products. And the Plaza de España setup offers a modern twist with an ice rink, food stalls and kids’ activities

If you’re more of a tradition lover, don’t miss the city’s many nativity scenes. Some of the best ones are displayed at Cibeles Palace, the Museum of Madrid History and Plaza de la Villa. These are usually free to visit and beautifully detailed.

Shows, ice rinks and family-friendly fun

Between early December and the first week of January, Madrid’s cultural calendar fills with concerts, musicals, circus shows and theatre performances. There are indoor and outdoor options in every district, many of them designed for families.

A must-see classic is Cortylandia, a holiday show on the front of the Corte Inglés store on Preciados Street. Generations of madrileños have grown up with its songs and colourful displays, making it a nostalgic favourite for many.

You’ll also find ice rinks in key locations like Matadero, Plaza de España and Colón. Some of them are surrounded by food stands, light displays and winter markets, so you can turn your skate session into a full plan.

For something more immersive, check out Naturaleza Encendida, a light-and-sound experience that this year takes place at Parque Enrique Tierno Galván — a magical walk through illuminated nature.

Take a break between lights: your ham plan starts here

After hours of walking, photos, and chilly weather, a warm stop is always welcome. That’s where Museo del Jamón comes in. With central locations in Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor and Paseo del Prado, you’ll find us right in the heart of the Christmas action.

Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, a full meal or just a cozy spot to warm up, we’ve got you covered. Enjoy a freshly sliced plate of Iberian ham, cured meats, cheese platters, and house-made desserts. You can stay at the bar or sit down in one of our spacious dining rooms — perfect for family meals or holiday meetups. Our friendly staff will help you pick the right dish and pairing to match the season.

Bring Christmas flavour home with you

Not every plan has to be in the streets. If you’re more of a “home for the holidays” type, we’ve got everything you need in our online store: Christmas hampers, whole or sliced ham, traditional sweets, cured sausages and more.

You can even send a gift basket anywhere in Spain — a thoughtful, delicious way to say Merry Christmas to friends, family, clients or employees.

All of our products are carefully selected and packaged to ensure quality, presentation and tradition in every bite.

Tips to make the most of your Christmas in Madrid

To enjoy everything Madrid offers during the holidays, our best tip is: don’t rush. Choose one area or route per day — for example, lights + market + ham break — and take your time.

Go early for the most popular attractions and leave the evenings for exploring. Double-check event details, especially if you need tickets or reservations. And if you’re visiting with children, plan for rest stops, warm food, and quieter moments between activities.

Madrid in December can be intense, but also welcoming and full of joy. And a good ham stop makes everything better.

Check our locations and make your break count with the flavour of Spain.
